Last we heard, Shiba Rescue GTA is expecting up to 10 Shiba Inu into their care. They are finding foster homes, but would appreciate any donations to help cover medical costs, including spay/neuter.

Quebec Puppy Mill Bust Update: The owners of the largest puppy mill bust in Canadian history were charged with over $10,000 in fines for 17 offenses which resulted in the seizure of over 630 dogs of various breeds. The Shiba Inu breed was counted amongst the dogs seized. As of the writing of this message, Shiba Rescue GTA will be taking into their care, the seized puppy mill Shibas. We are unsure ...of how many are coming into our care, but know for certain that a minimum of 4 Shibas have been identified. If you wish to help these Shibas we are seeking financial help (all of the Shibas are breeding dogs and need to be vaccinated and spayed/neutered and offered Veterinary care (some have skin issues) to offset some of the financial burden from our small rescue. Any offers of help would be gratefully appreciated. It is not often that our rescue has been placed in this type of position to help "local" Shibas. Please let us do this to the best of our ability. I admit, I don't like to share much of anything. Afterall, the Shiba Inu's favorite word is "MINE". I don't share my toys, I don't share my food. I don't share my owners. I don't share my bed. I don't share my space. Especally not with the cats, ewww! They are all MINE MINE MINE.

What? Mom? Did you say something? What's that? I DO share??? Mom!! I'm trying to keep my reputation here. Huh? A photo? A what?? When did you take that?? Man, I am so busted..sigh..

Shiba Inu Enjoys the Cool Weather

Ahhhh, fall is in the air...cooler weather, roohoo!!! I've had a miserable summer. Way too much humidity for my liking. I blew my coat the entire summer, stopped for about 2 weeks, and now I am starting again. Mom is thrilled. She keeps threatening me with a bath to loosen up the fur and get it overwith or something. All I know is that it's cooler outside, which means longer walks for me!!!! I had a hard time all summer. I love my walks, but in that heat, I would be the first to turn around to head home. Sometimes, even after 2 minutes, it was too much for me. Mom always brought plenty of water for me and took me out during the coolest times of the day. We even looked into jackets made especially for dogs to deal with cooler weather, but for one reason or the other, Mom didn't like them or the ones she did like, wouldn't fit me, humph. She took good care of me though :)

Hey, my 7th birthday is coming up this month, so a big shout out to my one and only sibling, my brother, Storm!!! Mom already gave me my first birthday gift - a stuffed snake, I love it love it love it!! It doesn't have stuffing inside, it has large funny squeakers, and it's tail rattles to. I have fun playing with it. My 2nd birthday gift (Mom says it's my gift for the rest of my life) is a fence for my new backyard! We are moving in a few weeks, and I will have a HUUUUUGE back yard to play in, I can't wait!!

Wow, so many exciting things going on. I need to take a nap. Behave yourselves all you Shibas. Well, make your owner think that you are ;)

Cat vs Dog

Our cat, Tatiana, and our dog, Sushi, have grown up together. They are both 7 yrs old. They got off to a rocky start, though. Tatiana was 5 months old when we brought 2 month old Sushi home. Tatiana growled, hissed and swatted at poor puppy Sushi. Sushi wouldn't come out of his crate if she was around. This lasted for about a day and a half. Finally, Sushi had had enough! He came racing out of his crate barking his head off at Tatiana, who quickly ran off. After that, they were the best of pals. Since they were the same size at that time, they would chase and wrestle all over the livingroom, it was pure fun and entertainment! As they got bigger, they still continue to play, and Sushi often mimics how Tatiana uses her paws. But, Sushi likes to be sneaky and tries to get in a few hipchecks now and then. Tatiana is almost always the instigator. I took this video the other night, as this goes on every time I am preparing their supper. You'll see our other cat, Bailey, for a few seconds at the beginning, she doesn't like to get involved!

Shiba Inu Mistaken for Coyote Released in the Wild

Ok, Shibas are always thought to be a fox,a husky, maybe even a wolf. But, this goes beyond ridiculous and I sincerely hope that Copper is found safe and soon, and returned. I realize the Shiba Inu is not a common breed, but I think this goes beyond a mere mistake.

Imagine if your dog got loose and was taken in by the local humane society, only to be handed over to law enforcement authorities because your dog was mistaken for a coyote. (OK, I know most dogs would not be mistaken for coyotes, but bear with me.) Then imagine if animal “experts” told authorities that coyotes are nuisance animals, and that they had two choices: Euthanize the animal, or return it to the wild.

This was the scenario in Frankfort, Kentucky, when Lori Goodlett’s Shiba Inu, Copper, ended up in the hands of police after being rejected by the Franklin County Humane Society because someone there thought she was a coyote. The police, not wanting to have to kill Copper, took her to an open field and released her, according to a story on WKYT.

Goodlett doesn’t hold the police accountable. At least they didn’t kill her dog. In fact, when officers later saw Copper’s photo on flyers Goodlett had posted and realized what had happened, they began helping her try to find her dog.

Copper is still missing. Goodlett would very much like to have her back, and spends a lot of time fielding phone calls from people who think they have spotted her. But so far, no leads have panned out.

This is so sad. I think of how Jake would fend if released into the wilds of Kentucky. Unless he ran into Col. Sanders wielding a bucket of fried chicken thighs, he’d probably be a goner. I hope Copper found her way to a kind home and will soon be returned to Goodlett for a very happy reunion. In the meantime, someone needs to get the Humane Society a very good book on dog breeds. And perhaps am equally good lawyer, too.

Shibas Meet With Troy & Emmie of Hike for our Heroes

If you own a Shiba Inu and have not heard of Troy & Emmie yet, you must not be active enough in the Shiba world of yahoo groups, facebook and twitter ;) Not to worry! Now is your chance to follow them on Facebook & Twitter simply by going to their website Hike for our Heroes

Troy is a war veteran walking across the country to raise funds and awareness to military families in need. His faithful sidekick, is 3 yr old black & tan Shiba Inu, Emmie. Emmie is also a certified Therapy Dog, and during her off hours, likes to chase ducks even if it means diving into a swamp! Troy's goal is to raise $5 million.

On their website, you can follow where they have been and where they will be going to. You can also buy merchandise to support them, and see photos along the way. And, of course, make donations.

This past weekend, approximately 15 Shibas from Missouri and Kansas met Troy, his wife, and Emmie. It was a lot of fun, and the Shibas behaved themselves perfectly. Even when the KC mascot came out to taunt them!

Have you heard about Troy & Emmie yet? Would you like to meet them, and also be a part of Animal Planet's show Dogs 101? Read on...

Iraq War Veteran Troy Yocum is hiking 7,000 miles across America, banging his drum and sounding the call for $5 million to help military families in need. With Emmie the SuperDog by his side, he took the first step of his 16-month quest on April 17, 2010. Their website is DRUM HIKE

I've spoken with Troy and a rep from Animal Planet (this is for the show Dogs 101) thru a conference call. A lot of ideas are being thrown around, so nothing is set in stone. But, this is what we are hoping for:

To meet Troy & Emmie in Kansas City, MO on Sat. June 26th at an AppleBee's (location to be determined). Troy will be there for a pancake breakfast from 8-10am. Shibas will be on leash of course, while walking with Troy and Emmie as they leave KC. We are hoping to involve MSIR (I will be sending out emails & posts on the yahoo groups).

For now, what we need to know is:

1. How many of you are willing to commit to attending on that Saturday morning? The more Shibas the better obviously! Please email me at c_and_b2002 @ yahoo.com Please note how many Shibas will be attending, as this is very important.

2. If any of you know any military families with a Shiba Inu, please have them contact me asap at c_and_b2002 @ yahoo.com Troy & Animal Planet are hoping to find a way to include them in the segment.

3. Emmie dove into a swamp this morning to chase after baby ducks and lost her Missouri Shiba group bandana. If anyone has one they are willing to give to her, please let me know as well. I will try to find Sushi's though, since he doesn't normally attend, but it might still be packed away. I might be able to get one ordered though.

The other date available is when Troy walks in to KCMO, which is Wed. morning June 23rd. I mentioned Saturday would be a chance of a better turnout, so let's hope it happens on the Saturday!

I will be posting this on Facebook, Twitter, on Sushi's blog, and everywhere I can think of. If I could ask you to do the same, I'm sure Troy & Emmie would greatly appreciate it. I don't mind my email being given out, and people can contact me regarding this.

Ok, Mom has finally gone overboard. I know she loves me, and she loves my name, but do you think she might have just gone a bit too far? You be the judge.

Collar was made by Bark and Giggle Boutique, and the charm was made by AllForJasmine.

Bark and Giggle Boutique is owned by Pam, who is owned by 2 adorable Shibas, Ryu & Roxy. She makes dog products but also baby products! What, did you think dogs could giggle? Your owner gets to choose the pattern for the collars, how cool is that! She has many other cool items as well.

AllForJasmine is a shop run by an 11 yr old girl. Yes, she is 11 yrs old. She is extremely talented and makes her items without any molds! Shassi, August 27, 1993 - January 6, 2010 ... Sunojo's Aka Shasta C.G.C.

The Shiba world will never be the same. If you are owned by a Shiba Inu, but have never heard of The Misanthropic Shiba then shame on you. If it weren't for Shassi, the Misanthropic Shiba, we owners would have truly been lost as to TRULY understanding this breed. Sushi and I never had the honour to meet Shassi and her owner, Julie, but we corresponded a few times and they even joined our Meetup group. I will be giving Sushi a few extra hugs tonight, as I'm sure all of you will do, also, with your own Shibas. Shibas are special and unique. And, Shassi taught and reminded us all of that. The Misanthropic website is, in my opinion, THE most informative & important website to learn about the Shiba. Thank you for being you, Shassi. And, thank you for teaching Julie to teach the rest of us :) You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Yappy New Year to all my Shiba pals!! Hope 2010 treats you well (and gives you treats, hehe). If you have snow, enjoy it while it lasts. We have about a foot of snow, and I LOVE it when Mom throws snowballs for me to chase. She loves it too, because it wears me out. I know she is hoping for an early spring though, humph!

We had a gift exchange in the Missouri Shiba Inu Meetup group. Mieko, Kika, and Dallas sent me some really cool toys and yummy treats - thanks!

I also got a really cool Christmas collar from Pam at Bark & Giggle Boutique, I love it!

And, Mom got a really nice Shiba and other Japanese dog breeds book from Jen (owned by Aki & Taylor). As you can see, Mom has put me in charge of translating it for her.

I also got more presents from my Grandmaw & Grandpaw in Missouri. My fav is the one that makes the most noise!

Tatiana & Bailey got something really cool, too - a Pirate Ship!!! Bailey likes to hide in it!

Finding a Vet - Choosing the Right Caregiver for Your Pet

Proper health care for your cat or dog is important. Consequently, choosing the right veterinarian is no small matter. Like other doctors, all vets are not alike and neither are animal clinics. Doing a little "legwork" before your pet needs medical attention can make a great deal of difference when the need arises.
Just to be clear, this is not about good or bad veterinarians. Vets are health care professionals and as such have invested a considerable amount of time and money to establish and maintain their practices. This requires the kind of dedication that comes from the desire to help. Simply put, vets do what they do because they love animals and have the best interests of their patients in mind. This is about finding the doctor or clinic that best suits your needs and those of your pet or pets.

Research: See who is available. So, where do you start when it's time to find a doctor for Fido or Fluffy? At the risk of stating the obvious, the first step is to find the vets or clinics in your area. Start with the 2 most popular resources: the Yellow Pages and the internet. This will give you a list of possibilities along with phone numbers and addresses. The odds are good that many listings or websites will also provide more information, such as the specialties of a particular vet, the clinic where he or she practices, etc. So, after this simple step, you should have a wealth of data at your fingertips. That was easy, wasn't it?

Networking: Get some opinions. Now it's time to see what you can find out about those vets and/or clinics. Start by asking around. Your friends and family are a great resource. If you've just moved to a new neighborhood, ask your neighbors if they can recommend someone. A possible bonus to this approach, of course, is the opportunity to meet your new neighbors and their pets. (note from Bonnie & Sushi - if you can find a reputable vet knowledgeable/familiar with the Shiba Inu, that's a bonus!)

Now, for those of you thinking, "Why not just call the closest clinic and make an appointment?", that would certainly be one approach. On the other hand, there's nothing quite like a "word of mouth" endorsement. A little networking may also bring other points to light, like pricing. Unless your pet needs to be seen right away, it's probably worth a little bit of your time to check around before picking up the phone.

Direct Contact: Check it out for yourself. Once you've gathered any information you can, you're ready to start making those calls. If one particular vet or clinic is well recommended, it makes sense to make that one first on your call list. Don't just jump right into making an appointment, however. Talk with the vet or a staff member about any special needs your pet has, the specialties of the doctor or doctors, emergency services and any other concerns you may have. Don't be embarrassed to ask about fees for checkups, shots or any other services. Your pet's health is your primary concern, but it's important to know how hard your pocketbook is going to be hit.

If things sound promising, ask when you might be able tour the facility and meet the staff. While this may sound unusual, it is actually quite common and most animal clinics will be happy to oblige. This will give you an opportunity to determine your comfort level with the caregivers and the environment.

While each pet owner will have some concerns of their own, here are a few items you way want to check:

Cleanliness Comfort for your pet: Is there a convenient area outside for your pet to relieve him/herself?

Is the waiting area large enough to keep pets separated?

Services and Equipment available on-site:

Emergency/trauma services

X-rays

Endoscopy

Ultrasound

EKG Lab work (blood, etc.)

Surgery Dental procedures

Boarding (Check for comfort and safety.)

Grooming Staff: Courteous and knowledgeable?

Parking/Loading Hours and availability: Evenings? Weekends?

After hours: Is a doctor on call for emergencies? (note from Bonnie & Sushi - quite a few clinics have no onsite staff after hours!)

If possible (and if you won't be charged for an initial visit), take your pet along for the tour. If your dog or cat is comfortable with the surroundings and staff, you're probably on the right track.

Last, but not least, remember that a little courtesy on your part will go a long way. Don't be rude or impatient; you're dealing with a medical facility and staff and their chief priority should be the health and welfare of the patients they're seeing. This also applies after you've chosen a veterinarian or animal clinic. Try to keep your appointments and arrive a few minutes early. If you need to reschedule, do so as early as possible. Handle payment and billing issues promptly. Control your pet when you're in the clinic. Keep in mind that these people are the second most important in your pet's life.

Do not be afraid to ask questions during vet visits, and do not be afraid to say "no" if something just doesn't feel right. You can take some time to think about your decisions. You CAN find another vet.)

Mom has decided to give the pet product business a shot. She says that I'M the inspiration for this (and our cats, too, humph!).

Anyways, she makes everything herself, mostly specializing in custom fleece pet beds - nice & cozy for this time of year! She also bakes dog treats - peanut butter (my fav!), cheese & chicken, and also had catnip toys and dog tug toys.

Olena is a good Shiba friend of mine & Sushi's, and we have been waiting anxiously to see this book, and we were not disappointed. The illustrations, in my opinion, are one of the best I've seen when it comes to the Shiba Inu, especially puppies. I wish I could hug Nicholas!! As expected, Nicholas is a very curious & silly Shiba puppy.

Whether you have kids or not, this book is a collector's item!

Do We Expect Too Much from our Shibas/Dogs?

I'll be the first to admit that I have probably overdone the obedience training with Sushi. I think the last advanced class we did was when he was 3 yrs old. My intention was to have a refresher. Sushi was bored out of his mind. Why? He knew all this stuff, so why do it again? So, I promised him that would be the last one. Since then, we have done a bit of agiity, which has helped to boost his confidence, and once he got the hang of it, look out, he loved it! (Going head first into the floor off the a-frame is not always a good thing, Sushi!).

Do we expect too much of our dogs? There are so many fun things to do with dogs - agility, rally-o, or even helpful things such as therapy or other things like just taking your dog with you everywhere you go.

Not all dogs enjoy this. Gasp! Did I just say that? But these are fun things, they are good things. Aren't they? Well, not always.

I think it is healthy to try new things with our dogs, because hey, they might enjoy it. But, I think as responsible dog owners, we need to recognize when the dog really doesn't enjoy something, and decide if it needs to be worked through, or to just let things be.

Sushi will be 6 yrs old this fall. I have officially retired him from Shiba Inu Meetups. He no longer enjoys them. Why? I don't know. But, he doesn't. As much as I would love to have him there, I have had to accept this, and now that I finally have (it took time!) I enjoy spoiling all the other Shibas, and realize I don't have to be looking out for Sushi.

What does Sushi enjoy these days? Walks, he loves his walks. Loves his Green Bear and playing with it. Loves his flying fox. So basically, walks & short playtimes. And, bellyrubs are a bonus.

We may still try rally-o at some point, but if Sushi doesn't have fun, then we won't continue.

I wonder if dog owners have it in the back of their minds what they expect from their dog, and think that dogs will just automatically do it or enjoy it. There are many things I would love to be able to do with Sushi, but he just isn't "that" dog. I'm not disappointed, I love Sushi with all my heart, he is a fantastic dog.

I just hope other owners don't feel disappointed by their dogs if they don't live up to their expectations of them.

Mom has always taught me tricks, since I was a puppy: sit, stay, lie down are the basics; fun ones are: spin, wave, gimme 10, shake a paw, say your prayers, crawl, catch & yum yum. I am currently learning "touch" and I'm hearing rumours I'm going to learn how to cross my paws soon!

A few months ago, Mom joined because I am very timid around my Father in Law. This group is a wonderful source of advice and support.

Mom took their advice, and incorporated my tricks into CookieTime with CookieGuy (aka FIL). It's been a slow process but I have come a long way. I will now paw at his knee for a treat, whereas before, no way would I get that close!

Mom feels that when I do tricks, I am focused, rather than dancing around anxiously. Ok, I still do that a little bit, but not as much as I used to! The tricks boost my confidence, especially when I'm given the commands "spin" or "bark" or "wave". I love those ones!! "Catch" is becoming a good one as well, because I will actually take a step forward to get closer to catch the treat!

Mom thinks that without the treats, I would still progress, but not as well as I have. Besides, it's FUN and involves really stinky cookies -roohoo!!!

I've noticed, since the now famous Shiba puppy cam, the incredible amount of inquiries about the Shiba Inu. On Yahoo!Answers, everyday, someone is asking about Shibas, what they are like, should they get one, will they get along with their current pets, etc...

So...in an effort to stop Mom from replying to all of them (she can't help herself from wanting to protect the breed), I suggested to Mom that she post the info gathered from the The Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup Group.
This group has been around for 5 years, with over 140 members, so you can imagine how much Shiba Inu information there might be. What better way to learn about the Shiba Inu than from the owners themselves!

Shiba Inu in the Media - good or bad?

Did you watch the now famous Shiba Inu puppy cam? Who didn't? Have you heard about the upcoming movie "Hachiko" which is about a loyal Akita, but Shiba Inu puppies were used in the movie. The Shiba Inu is getting more and more exposure, and I have to wonder if that is a good thing or not.

Yes, I loved watching the Shiba Inu puppy cam. I have a Shiba Inu, so re-living those cutesy puppy days was a lot of fun. I know many Shiba owners felt the same.

What concerns me are the people that enjoyed watching the puppy cam and now want a Shiba Inu based on the extreme cuteness. I guess it's just like when 101 Dalmatians became a movie, and the upcoming movie "Marley & Me" will probably have the same effect - it brings interest towards a specific breed and a lot of people/kids will want one.

The Shiba Inu is not for everyone. Sushi and I are still sorting each other out and it's been 5 yrs! Shibas are very intelligent and can continue to challenge you whenever they feel like it. They can be a lot of work. Yes, the learn quickly, but they can also be very stubborn.

So, for anyone out there considering adding a Shiba Inu to their family, Sushi and I beg that you do A LOT of research and be SURE that this is the breed for you (and that you are the right family for the Shiba!).

If you want to get a Shiba Inu from a breeder, again, do your research first. When you are ready to visit a breeder, read the following tips on how to identify a good dog breeder below:

When Can I Bring My Puppy home?

Not before the pup is 8-10 weeks old. If the pup is removed from it's Mom before 8 weeks, the pup could possibly end up with serious behavioural or health issues.

How to Identify a Good Dog Breeder - Tips from The Humane Society of the United States

Look for a breeder who at a minimum:

-Keeps her dogs in the home and as part of the family--not outside in kennel runs.
-Has dogs who appear happy and healthy, are excited to meet new people, and don't shy away from visitors.
-Shows you where the dogs spend most of their time--an area that is clean and well maintained.
-Encourages you to spend time with the puppy's parents--at a minimum, the pup's mother--when you visit.
-Breeds only one or two types of dogs, and is knowledgeable about what is called "breed standards" (the desired characteristics of the breed in areas such as size, proportion, coat, color and temperament).
-Has a strong relationship with a local veterinarian and shows you the records of veterinary visits for the puppies. Explains the puppies' medical history and what vaccinations your new puppy will need.
-Is well versed in the potential genetic problems inherent in the breed--there are specific genteic concerns for every breed--and explains to you what those concerns are. The breeder should have had the puppy's parents tested (and should have the results from the parents' parents) to ensure they are free of those defects, and she should be able to provide you with the documentation for all testing she has done through organizations such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals(OFA).
-Gives you guidance on caring and training for your puppy and is available for your assistance after you take your puppy home.
-Provides references of other families who have purchased puppies from her.
-Feeds high quality "premium" brand food.
-Doesn't always have puppies available but rather will keep a list of interested people for the next available litter.
-Actively competes with her dogs in conformation trials (which judge how closely dogs match their "breed standard"), obedience trials (which judge how well dogs perform specific sets of tasks on command), or tracking and agility trials. Good breeders will also work with local, state, and national clubs that specialize in their specific breeds.
-Encourages multiple visits and wants your entire family to meet the puppy before you take your puppy home.
-Provides you with a written contract and health guarantee and allows plenty of time for you to read it thoroughly. The breeder should not require that you use a specific veterinarian.

In addition to the above criteria, you'll want a breeder who requires some things of you, too. A reputable breeder doesn't just sell her puppies to the first interested buyer!

The breeder should require you to:

-Explain why you want a dog.
-Tell her who in the family will be responsible for the pup's daily care, who will attend training classes, where the dog will spend most of her time, and what "rules" have been decided upon for the puppy--for example, will the dog be allowed on furniture?
-Provide a veterinary reference if you already have pets or, if you don't have other pets, she should ask which practices you are considering for your new puppy.
-Provide proof from your landlord or condominium board (if you rent or live in a condominium complex) that you are allowed to have companion animals.
-Sign a contract that you will spay or neuter the dog unless you will be actively involved in showing him or her (which applies to show-quality dogs only).
-Sign a contract stating that you will return the dog to the breeder should you be unable to keep the dog at any point in the dog's life.

(note from Bonnie: when visiting a breeder, ask to see the parent's pedigree before making a decision; take a good look at it; parents should not be from the same litter. Also, if a breeder refuses to show you all of their dogs or where they "live", etc...walk away right then and there.)

Humph!!! Mom said that since my undercoat has refused to grow in and I get cold at the park, that she had to buy me a jacket. Can you believe that? She did promise to not make me look completely ridiculous and says I look quite distinguished in it. Some pals have said the colour goes perfectly with my colouring, whatever THAT means. I guess it's ok, now that I've learned I can still pee and poop! Shiba Inus are double coated, and normally I blow my coat every Christmas, but I was early this year...still waiting for it to come back...

If you own, or are owned or want to be owned by a Shiba Inu, do yourself a humungous favour and join a Shiba Inu Meetup Group. There are several across Canada and the U.S. If there isn't one listed, start one, you will not regret it!

Mom became the Organizer of the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup group 4 yrs ago and we now have approximately 140 members. On average, there are 15-20 Shibas at a playdate, sometimes more! It's an amazing sight to see, and so much fun. Now, Mom is also the Organizer of the Missouri Shiba Inu Meetup group.

But, the Meetup groups can be so much more than just getting together at the park. There are Message Boards, which is an excellent way to get to know other Shiba owners before attending a Meetup - you'll feel like you already know them. On top of that, the amount of information on Shibas is invaluable!!! What better way to understand the breed than to speak with the owners! Socialization is one of the best things you can do for your Shiba, and the more you understand the breed, the better the relationship you will have with your Shiba Inu.

Life With a Shiba Inu In Missouri

Well, it's been 2 weeks since my family loaded myself, the 2 cats, and the 3 dwarf hamsters into the cars and we went on a looooong road trip. Mom told me that we were moving to a place called Missouri and promised it would be lots of fun! Oh boy, I love fun!

We stayed in 3 hotels, which was kinda neat - even the cats didn't seem to mind. Now we are in Missouri (Harrisonville), and adjusting to our new home.

We are out in the country, and wow that is a big change! I'm a cityslicker, love to stick to the sidewalks, and not get my Shiba paws covered in tall grass - ick!

It's been quite the adventure. I've made one good friend. He met us the day we arrived and I see him every once in awhile. We call him Buddy :)

Other than him, there are a lot of other dogs around here that get to run loose - but I can't! How unfair is that!!! I complain during leashed walks all the time but Mom & Dad won't let me loose, humph!

But, Mom found a really cool park for me to go to and we are there almost every day when we can. I've even made 2 new Shiba pals since Mom started the Missouri Shiba Inu Meetup group. Taylor & Aki are from MSIR and are really cool and fun.

Mom says that aside from my dislike of meeting other dogs while on leash, that I have done remarkably well with all the changes in my life, and gives me bellyrubs every morning when we get up. I guess life here ain't so bad...

Well, their owners, Kathy & Peter came alllllll the way from Pennsylvania to meet us! How cool is that! They were super nice and even gave me a Possum to kill!!! I've tried my best to de-stuff the possum the way Tsuki & Yoshi do...but Mom says I'm more of a lover than a killer.

Shibas are born believing they are Top Dog. It is up to the owner to establish Top Dog status as soon as possible. The Shiba will thank you for it. However, it's not always easy to do this. Sushi will be 5 yrs old in September. Am I Alpha? Yes...and no... So, basically, no, lol! Or at least, not in all situations, but we are working on it.

How do you know? Well, whoevever is making all the decisions is the Alpha.

Young Shiba Inu Needs His Forever Home

Meet Chigo, a young male Japanese Shiba Inu. Chigo is a very intelligent boy, with plenty of energy to burn! He needs owners who are true Alphas, can match his energy and challenge him. This is a high energy playful approximately two year old Shiba Inu. He weighs about 23lbs. He is very sweet and affectionate. He loves rides in the car and toys.

Chigo somehow lost his owners and was found at the local pound where he was removed into rescue. He is about two years old, neutered, up to date on all shots, heartworm negative. This dog knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. Chigo is looking for a new owner who will provide firm direction and has some training experience. Because of his nature, the adoption requirement will include an agreement to take obedience training. No cats in the home since he has a very high prey drive.

Mom decided "we" needed more work. "We" really means "Mom". I know all this stuff, I"m bored. Oh wait, we did learn a few new things, to which I perked up to! I know one of the other dogs in the class, a cute Coton du Tulear. The other 2 dogs are bigger than me and I don't like it. Oh yeah...THAT'S why Mom said we are back in school, humph. Something about reastablishing who is alpha. I like the teacher though - she doesn't let me get away with anything, but she likes me :) I've known her since I was a puppy and she even takes care of me when Mom and Dad go away. I guess school isn't so bad, afterall.

Socializing Your Shiba Inu

It's always important to socialize your dog, whether it's a puppy or an older dog. They need the exposure to people, kids, other dogs, life, etc...

That being said, I always encourage newer members of the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup group to start coming out to the Shiba events as soon as they can with their Shiba Inu. The Shibas get to hang out with their own kind, some are reunited with their littermates, and the owners get the chance to compare stories & concerns with other owners who are going through the same thing or have already been there done that.

The sooner you can enroll your Shiba Inu in puppy class or have it involved with other dogs, people, etc...the better. You can never do enough for your Shiba!

Some people, breeders, owners, etc...used to say that Shibas don't get along with their own kind. Well, I"m here to tell you that isn't always true. Our last Meetup event had 26 Shiba Inu attend - all different ages, colours and sizes. Everyone got along wonderfully. We do have fantastic owners who are very attentive to their Shibas.

Meet my new friend

The Shiba Inu was bred to flush out small game. Well, Sushi does have a prey drive, but I wonder if really small is just too small? HUH? lol

We have 3 Dwarf Hamsters. 2 of them we were told were males, but of course, 1 was female and we ended up with 8 babies! Needless to say, we found good homes for all of them except 1. We figured after all of that, we should at least keep one! So, we kept Pepe.

For whatever reason, anytime I mention "Hey, Pepe's up!", Sushi comes running to sniff noses with his new pal. I still wouldn't trust Sushi with him for a second, but it's cute that they seem to like each other.

Happy Birthday, Shiba Inu - Style!

Yesterday was my Birthday, I turned 4 yrs old! I was very spoiled. Mom took me to the park early in the morning to play with my pals, and afterwards we sent to my favourite store and my friend that works there bought me a bone! How cool is that! Mom & Dad bought me 2 fun toys - 1 for outside and 1 for inside. I love to play!

Busy Shiba Life!

I had to drag Mom to the computer to update my blog, hmph!! I know things have been busy, but there is no excuse.

I had struvite crystals, which meant it hurt when I peed and there was some blood in my pee. I didn't like that at all!! I wanted my Mom to make it all go away. So, she took me to the vet, they gave me some medication and different food. Now, I am back to my old self. The vet things I was passing stones, though, and this may be the 2nd time this has happened. I"m not looking forward to this happening again anytime soon!

Summer has been ok. Mom went to the Agility Nationals to watch a Shiba Inu, Soshi, compete. They did SUPER!!!! Soshi and her owner, Brandi came in 5th place, and were very proud, as they should be! Mom said it was a lot of fun seeing a Shiba Inu off-leash and doing agility so well! She also bought me a stuffed duck that makes funny quacking noises, I love it!!

Mom and her pals have been busy with placing Shiba Inus in forever homes. They now have 1 Shiba Inu available, Aiko - very sweet girl! Mom's heart had gone out to a little black & tan, Kichi (means Fortunate), and Kichi has found her wonderful new family, yay!! I met Kichi a few weeks ago - we were posing for the 2008 K9 Rescue Me Calendar! Here's a picture of us.

Mom has been going a bit crazy lately. She is planning the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup Group's 2nd Annual Fun n Games Event. She "thinks" she is nearly organized now. I saw a lot of yummy treats just waiting for me to taste test them...sluuuuurpppp!!! The event is on Saturday, Sept. 15th in Mississauga. Mom said she is expecting at least 21 Shiba Inus, and more!! We'll be sure to post a video or photo from the day.

Hey!! Guess what? My brother found me!! There was just the 2 of us in the litter. We will be turning 4 years old this month - it took us that long to find each other. Just by email, but someday maybe we'll get to play together, that would be cool. His name starts with an "S" too - Storm! That's his picture at the top of this post! Don't we look alike? And, we have a similar blanket too! He's on the left, I'm on the right.

Putting Shiba paws to the pavement!

Well, the K9 Rescue Me Walkathon was a huge success! Over 20 dog rescues in Ontario participated, and together raised approximately $50, 000!!! Roohoo!!! Shiba Rescue GTA did very well, and there were about 10 Shibas in the walkathon. It was a beautiful day, and we found a nice park to stop at to rest, play, hang out. We had 4 rescued Shibas attend this year, so it was more special than usual.

On June 10, 2007, the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup group will be participating in the 4th Annual K9 Rescue Me Walkathon. Shiba Rescue GTA is part of the K9 Rescue Me group which consists of nearly 20 different dog rescues across Ontario, Canada. This is Canada's largest canine rescue fundraising event!

A Perfect Shiba Inu Day

I am so proud of Sushi today. It actually started yesterday though. Sushi has had issues with fear aggression towards other dogs. He didn't always used to be that way. About a year and a half ago, he was pinned down at the park by a not-so-friendly Labradoodle. Since then, it's been a gradual change for Sushi's behaviour. He used to LOVE playing with the big dogs, now he is afraid of them. He doesn't run and hide. He has not attacked either, but he does freak out, growling, snarling, ears back and he becomes uncontrollable. For a year now, Sushi and I have been working on his behaviour with the help of his trainer.

Yesterday, I took Sushi for a walk. We now have a Boxer/Shepherd mix living across the street from us. Before Sushi could spot him, I had Sushi "settle" aka lie down and gave the command "watch me". For some reason, lately, he's been listening better to me! lol He did as I asked, but kept sneaking peeks over at Max, and barking his head off. An improvement over freaking out and growling/snarling. He eventually calmed down, and then I gave him tons of praise, a treat, and continued on our walk to the park. I was very proud of him.

I"ve been watching The Dog Whisperer, it's now my new fav show. I now make sure Sushi is calm and relaxed before approaching a situation where I think he might act up. It's working. I've also learned to relax and appear more confident. We've also been re-working on heel. So far so good!!

Today, I took Sushi to his fav park in Mississauga - Totoredaca Park. We always go very early in the morning and only in the small dog area, as nearly no one else uses it. Sushi has his usual pals that will come over and play with him though - 2 Beagles, 2 Basenjis and an older Lab. Sushi is good with all of them, including the Lab. If a bigger dog has no interest in Sushi, Sushi is ok with them.

Today it was just the Beagles and Sushi. Sushi had so much fun, doing the Shiba 500 several times and playing. He usually will growl at some of the bigger dogs on the other side of the fence, but today, it was not as intense. And, when his "nemesis" - a big hound that barks very loudly all the time entered the park (other side of the fence), Sushi listened to me when I gave the command "watch me". He took peaks at the dog, but for Sushi to listen and do as I asked in that kind of situation, was a HUGE improvement. Even I was surprized!

We stayed for about an hour, since Sushi was doing so well and having so much fun. Later in the morning, for a treat, I took him to his favourite store - Global Ryan's Pet Food store in Brampton. His fav pal, Leah works there so he got some extra treats and fussed over.

It's been a great Shiba Day!!!

PS: Sushi is one tired pooch, yay!

CAN YOU PROVIDE A FOREVER HOME FOR DASHER? Dasher is a very handsome 8 yr old 28 lb male looking for a new forever home.

He is up to date on his shots, neutered, housebroken and crate-trained. He loves walks and is food motivated. As with some other dogs, he can be mildly affected by seasonal allergies. Dasher needs someone that is familiar with this breed and is willing to commit themselves to training. Dasher will also need time spent to socialize him around people. The potential adopter must have experience with dogs, patience, time, and a lot of love. Dasher needs to be in a mature, adult home preferably with another dog and an owner that will respect and understand his quirks, needs and personality. No cats or young children in the home. .

* Dasher would enjoy being the second dog in the home; he enjoys dog play time and is more comfortable not being the center of attention. .

Safety First!

Being wintertime, I'm reminded a little bit more about car safety. Not just for people, but for our furkids as well.

Two years ago, Sushi and I were in a bad car accident, after having a wonderful time at the dog park. 3 cars were involved in the accident - mine was written off. I had 7 months of physiotherapy on my knees and then my back. Sushi was scared to be in the car for about 2 months, but other than that, my little Shiba Inu boy was unharmed. Sushi was wearing his seatbelt harness, which to this day, I believe saved his life. Please, if you allow your dog to remain free in the car or even worse, allow him/her to sit up front with you - please don't do that anymore. You are putting your dog at risk, and even yourself. Find a good seatbelt harness - one that won't allow too much movement; the dog should not be able to wiggle his way out of it. With Sushi's, he can sit and lie down; it can also be used as a regular harness for walks. A crate is the best option and should be placed behind the passenger seat, in the back of course. It should be positioned in between the back of the passenger seat and the back of the backseat, so it can not budge. There are other options as well - some people install a guard or gate, depending on the vehicle they own. Do not take your pet's life for granted. An accident can happen so quickly, and there is no way for your pet to prepare himself for it.

Lots and lots of snow!

Oh boy, it snowed a lot last night. Sushi loves the snow, but this time he seems unsure whether to be excited or not about it. The snow nearly touches his belly. He leaps and hops through the snow. I had to trudge around our yard to make a path for him, which he now uses for his Shiba 500. He keeps wanting to go outside, he loves it if you take a shovelfull of light snow and throw it for him to catch. Crazy Shiba.

Shiba Rescue GTA

Shiba Rescue GTA was founded last year in the spring (2006). A 9 yr old female Shiba Inu was left at a local Toronto shelter. Her name is Yoshi, and it is because of her that Shiba Rescue GTA was born. My friend and I (also from the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup group) realized there wasn't an active rescue dedicated to the Shiba Inu in the Greater Toronto Area. Currently, Shiba Rescue GTA is the only Shiba rescue in Canada. We do not have a shelter, we have foster homes. We conduct interviews, home visits, reference checks. Shibas are not for everyone and placing them in the right home is very important. The Shiba 500

For those that are owned by a Shiba Inu already, you know what I'm talking about. The infamous Shiba 500. Where your Shiba runs like s/he's psycho at warped speed and the best thing you can do is cheer them on but stay out of the way! Sushi had 2 rounds of the Shiba 500 tonight. He used to do this more often as a puppy, but I still laugh everytime he does it. I think when I laugh it encourages him to run even more! Odd things can set off the Shiba 500 - a good poop usually does it. But, tonight, it was because I furminated him outside. The Furminator is an excellent "comb" to help when they are blowing their coats. Sushi's nickname these days is "FuzzButt".

6 Shiba Inus + Snow + 1 Park = FUN!

Yesterday, was our first Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup event of 2007. 6 Shiba Inus attended, it was cold and there was snow - but do you think the Shibas cared? Of course not! They were too busy, yapping away, running, chasing snowballs, playing. It was a lot of fun! Next month...maybe indoors though...

The Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup Group

I"m the Organizer of the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup Group. This will be my 3rd year organizing park playdates for these crazy wonderful Shibas. I don't know who originally founded the group. I stumbled upon it the same way that most of our members have - on the internet. The Organizer at the time asked if I would like to give it a shot, I said "yes" and the rest is history.

We have over 70 members so far and we average 8-10 Shibas at each Meetup. We get together at various parks across the Greater Toronto Area once or twice a month. We've gone to parks not only in Toronto, but in Mississauga, Brampton, Guelph, Acton. We have members in those areas, but also in Ajax, Oshawa, Ottawa...all over the place!

We've participated in events to help raise money for dog rescues in Ontario, including Shiba Rescue GTA

Some of our Shibas are in the 2007 K9 Rescue Me Calendar, and one of member's puppy got the honour of being on the cover of the calendar!

We've had indoor meetups as well - the Shibas even had the chance to learn some agility!

Last year we had our 1st Annual Fun n Games Event in Mississauga - that was a lot of fun, and we had a great turnout, too. Perfect weather. We played games, had some contests, raffled some treats. It was great, I can't wait to do it again this year!

I love meeting new owners or future owners. And, of course, getting to see all the Shibas play and have so much fun (and go home tired!) is the best part. Sushi has so many Shiba pals now :)

This year will be a busy year for events too. I think we'll reach 100 members by the end of the year - exciting! There can never be enough Shiba Inus!!

Sushi thinks he's a cat!

Sushi is confused. He thinks he is a cat, not a Shiba Inu!

We have 2 cats - a Torti named Tatiana, who is only a few months older than Sushi. Our other one is a black cat named Bailey.

Sushi grew up with Tatiana. Shibas are known to be very catlike and I see that quite often. When they play, Sushi will try to mimic how Tatiana plays - uses his paws and just the way he moves. It's interesting to watch them.

Sushi has a folded up comforter in our livingroom which he likes to sleep on. One afternoon, Tatiana decided she wanted to figure out if there was anything inside the folds of the comforter. She pawed at it until she could crawl inside of it. Sushi, of course, was FASCINATED. Ever since then, we notice Sushi's comforter is messed up, moved around. We saw him pawing at it a few times then would lie down on it. I realized he was copying Tatiana once again.

Tonight, I was finally able to get a good picture of him - I guess he doesn't need to be tucked into bed anymore, he takes care of that himself!

SNOW!!

This morning we finally had some snow on the ground. Sushi LOVES snow. He is double coated, so the cold and snow don't bother him at all. So, out we went into the yard to play his favourite game of catch the snow (couldn't quite make snowballs). Now, all day he keeps bugging me to go outside to play some more. We'll go out in a little while, it's still snowing, and it'll be more fun with more snow. In the meantime, Sushi is ok with the compromise of letting him look out our bedroom window and watching the world go by.

Hi,

I'm Bonnie and I"m proudly owned by a Shiba Inu named Sushi. Sushi was born on Sept. 22, 2003, he is a red sesame male from Cusona Kennels in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of having lots and lots of dogs; or maybe being a veterinarian; anyway, I just knew that someday I would have my own dog and maybe be lucky enough to be involved in the dog world somehow.

Well, it's happened. It's all Sushi's fault, lol. He stole my heart. A true Shiba Inu "mine!".

Sushi is a wonderful dog, he makes me laugh, we love going to the park, he loves to play soccer, loves to play with his toys and with our 2 cats, Tatiana & Bailey. He's a good boy!

Because of Sushi, I know and have met over approximately 50 Shibas since owning him. I was asked to become Organizer of the Toronto Shiba Inu Meetup group http://shibainu.meetup.com/4/about I started in 2004, and it has been such a fun and rewarding experience. Last year, I co-founded Shiba Rescue GTA http://www.shibarescuegta.ca It has been a challenging experience and I am learning so much, but there is no better feeling than seeing a rescue Shiba Inu going to his/her forever home :)

So, as you can see, my world is Shiba Inu 24/7 and I wouldn't have it any other way.

This is what this blog is about. My life and Sushi's life with the wonderful, quirky Shiba Inu.
